Here's what we've done so far...
We held the first African American Leadership Summit in July, to learn how to convince more African Americans of the need to increase the Black donor base. What did you tell us, what did we learn, and what did we do?

1) "You don't look like us, how can you relate to African Americans?"
We changed the staff of the Wisconsin Donor Network from 5% African American to 30%, all professional and management positions.

2) "Our community has fears about the organ donation process."
We hired and trained African Americans to help African Americans make their decision about organ donation in the hospital.

3) "Do something about our health before we need organ transplants"
We are beginning free central-city kidney health and hypertension screening and education about organ donation.

4) "Do something about African Americans becoming potential donors before their time"
We are beginning a program to reduce violent deaths of African Americans by working with Milwaukee's city and community leaders.

5) "Do something to get this message out to the community"
We are building a television series: "Changing the Face of Donation", to address these issues, airing in early 2007, with a television, radio, and print campaign for long term approach to our community. And we HAVE had recent success, as organ donation from African Americans rose in the last months. But, we need to do better, and we need your help and direction.
